Marcus Mason: Congressional Chief of Staff at the Age of 22

Marcus Mason is a Senior Partner at The Madison Group, a boutique bipartisan consulting and lobbying firm that specializes in tax, technology, telecommunications, trade and transportation issues. Clients include Google and Education Network of America. Marcus also serves as the President of the Washington Government Relations Group (WGRG), an organization of African American lobbyists whose goal is to enrich the community, by providing mentorship and professional growth opportunities while promoting diversity within the lobbying profession. Marcus was raised in Los Angeles, CA. He attended California State University - Dominguez Hills, where he obtained a B.A. in Political Science, Economics, and English. His first job in government was working for a state senate campaign in CA, and he won his first Congressional race as a campaign manager at 21. At 22 Marcus began his career as a Chief of Staff/Legislative Director in the U.S. House of Representatives. He served in that role from ’92-’99. He then transitioned to the private sector, where he worked as the Senior Director of Government Affairs for Amtrak. Marcus has served on the Board of Directors for the Congressional Black Caucus Political Action Committee for the last 10 years. He also serves as a Super Delegate on the Democratic National Committee. “50% of my job is advocating for my client to Capitol Hill, and the other 50% is advocating Capitol Hill to my client.” The Washington Government Relations Group offers a number of events, including a Table Talk Series where they hold lunches with seasoned professionals and young individuals. They also host the annual Tin Cup Awards Dinner recognizing those who advocate for the enrichment of African American Government Relations Professionals. The WGRG also facilitates college scholarships for young adults interested in government relations.
